Rather interesting development, whether you're a green investor yourself or simply someone with a care for the planet: Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, generally known as someone with a fair eye for the next big thing, has plunged a whole stash of cash into algae biofuel company Sapphire Energy. Once production is up and running, Sapphire aims to produce 10,000 barrels of so-called 'Green Crude' per day. This stuff, made using sunlight, CO2, industrial micro-organisms, non-arable land and non-drinkable water, can be refined into a petrol alternative compatible with existing cars and machines. They're calling it the first 'renewable gasoline'.
After all the hype about other biofuels and the horrible implications for the world's hungry and the rainforests, it's difficult to buy into another 'dream solution' to the energy issue. Looks good on paper though, wonder if I'll be rueing the day I didn't invest in Sapphire?
